“Robert’s Gone a Racing Now”
by Karen Olsen
(adapted from “Andy’s Gone with Cattle Now” by Henry Lawson)
Our Robert’s gone a punting now;
At the big race track in the sky.
He’s left us all alone now;
In sadness we all cry.
He’s left us empty hearted now;
We miss him every day.
It’s dull at this racetrack now,
Since Robert went away.
Who now shall wear the cheerful face
In times when things are slackest?
And, who shall rally round the place
When fortune frowns her blackest?
Oh, who shall cheek the trainers now
When they come around us bragging?
And, who shall cool our tempers now
When stewards come a nagging?
Oh may his pick of the day come in;
And all the others fall down.
The joy of picking the dog to win;
His pride would go to town.
So here we are together now,
To bid a last goodbye.
Robert's forever in our hearts now,
At the race track in the sky.
